DESCRIPTION:State Representative Gloria Johnson has dedicated her life to serving Tennesseans\, fighting for justice and standing tall for all who have been left out\, left behind\, or left without a voice. \nGloria is running for U.S. Senate because she knows it is time to shift power back where it belongs: with working and middle class families. Growing up\, Gloria remembers sleeping in the hallway of their family home\, instead of her bedroom\, to avoid gunshots from the KKK.  The Klan terrorized her family because Gloria’s Dad\, an FBI Special Agent\, had the courage to investigate their wickedness in the Deep South and bring members of the KKK to justice. \nA special education teacher of 27 years\, Gloria was fed up with elected officials attacking the rights of public school students and teachers. After the legislature took away a teacher’s seat at the table\, she decided to run for the Tennessee House in Knoxville in 2012 — she won and has been fighting to hold extreme politicians and special interests accountable ever since. \nThis year\, when a murderer stole the lives of three 9-year-olds and three adults in a mass school shooting in Tennessee\, Gloria once again stood tall for victims of injustice. \nAs a member of the “Tennessee Three” she demanded Republican politicians in Nashville stop with the BS and pass gun safety measures to prevent future shootings. For speaking truth to power\, Republican leaders tried to kick her out of office.  But Gloria survived the politically charged expulsion vote and she is now helping to build a statewide movement for change. \nIn August 2023\, during a special legislative session\, Gloria stood up before Tennessee’s leadership to recount the day her former high school was devastated by a school shooting\, where her students witnessed their classmate take his last breath. Her Republican colleagues were interested in protecting guns instead of kids\, and instead passed draconian legislation to censor grieving families and elected leaders at the Tennessee Capitol. \nTennesseans are fed up with corrupt\, “do nothing” politicians\, like Marsha Blackburn\, who has taken millions from the pharmaceutical industry\, the NRA and the insurance industry while voting against lowering our drug costs\, against bipartisan gun reform\, and for denying coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.  And Tennessee women deserve a Senator who trusts them to make their own medical decisions\, unlike Blackburn who called the repeal of Roe v. Wade “a blessing” and has long supported passing a federal abortion ban. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Giles County Democratic Party welcomes the Tennessee Democratic Party’s state chairman\, Hendrell Remus\, to a special event on Oct. 23\, 2021\, at 1 p.m. \nThe event is free to all Democrats and those eager to learn more about the Party’s agenda for the upcoming years. \nRemus is the first African American elected to serve as Tennessee’s state party chairman and the first in state history to be chair of any major party. At 34 years old he is also the first millennial to serve in such a capacity. \nRemus served as an Ex-officio member of the Tennessee Democratic Party Executive Committee and as the National Committeeman for the TN Young Democrats. \nWith a commitment to Democratic values\, Remus has worked on a number of TN campaigns. From serving as a strategic advisor to mayoral and state house candidates to assisting local school board\, city council and county commission races\, he has been an asset to Democratic candidates and causes.  Often driven by the same volunteerism that led him into politics during the 2008 campaign of Barack Obama. \nPrior to becoming Chair\, Hendrell Remus worked as the Assistant Director of Emergency Management at Tennessee State University\, a role that followed his tenure as the Middle TN Operations Manager for Allied Universal. \nHis background in business management and operations\, coupled with a passion for progressive politics\, sets the tone for his leadership at the helm of TNDP. Chair Remus is focused on building a stronger TN Democratic party infrastructure and beginning the hard work to register more voters and elect more Democrats. \n“We are going to take back the mantle of the people\, it’s time for us to start highlighting how under republican leadership so many have really falling off the economic cliff\,” Remus said. \nRemus admits the “to-do” list is long. \n“I’m extremely hopeful for the future of the Democratic Party and I think we’re going to do some great things in the coming years\,” said the Memphis native who lives in Nashville with his wife and two children. \nDonations to the Giles County Democratic Party will be accepted at the Oct. 23 free event. \nAdditionally\, a limited number of Giles County Democratic Party T-Shirts will be available for a minimum $15 donation. \n

SUMMARY:October 2021 Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:All Democrats are welcome to attend the monthly meeting to discuss plans for fall and other initiatives of the local party. \nAt our last meeting we decided at our meetings everyone should be vaccinated or have had a negative covid test within seven days of the meeting.  That way we can feel safe to meet in person indoors.  We will still wear masks and social distance. \nIf you do not want to meet these requirements and still want to participate in the meeting\, we hope to offer you a zoom option if you let us know in advance.

SUMMARY:Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate to Speak on Pulaski’s Public Square Oct. 9
DESCRIPTION:Jason Martin\, M.D. will speak on Pulaski’s Courthouse Square on Saturday\, Oct. 9\, at 11:30 a.m. \nThe director of Hendersonville’s critical care unit\, Martin has been a vocal critic of Governor Bill Lee’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis. \n“Overall\, I feel like the governor’s response to COVID has been ‘fend for yourself\,’” Martin recently stated in the Tennessean newspaper. “I think it’s costing people’s lives.” \nThe physician\, who announced his 2022 candidacy for the Governorship of Tennessee in August\, has no prior governmental service. He has referred to himself as an “authentic outsider” and a “moderate” Democrat. As such\, he is conducting a listening tour to meet as many Tennesseans as possible during visits to each of the state’s 95 counties. \nHe has stated his platform as including job creation\, affordable health care and fully-funded education. His appearance in Pulaski\, like during other stops of his listening tour\, are to hear voters’ issues and concerns. \nThe public is encouraged to attend this first step in Martin’s run for leadership of Tennessee.

SUMMARY:Giles County 2021 Biennial Reorganization Convention
DESCRIPTION:All County Democrats Welcome\nThe Giles County Democratic Party will hold a Biennial Reorganization Convention to elect new leaders on Aug. 14. The meeting will take place in an open-air pavilion at the Giles County Agri-Park\, 2014 Elkton Pike\, Pulaski.  \nWearing masks is strongly encouraged\, and all efforts will be made to comply with CDC guidelines for Covid-19 and its variants\, according to Convention organizers \n“All Democrats who are registered voters of Giles County are urged to attend to discuss the party’s agenda for 2021-2022\,” said local party chairman Tom Gattis. “Attendees should arrive early to complete credentialing forms.” \nRegistration begins at 9:30 a.m. The Biennial Reorganization Convention is being held between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.\, during which time local Democrats will elect a Chair\, Vice Chair(s)\, Secretary and Treasurer. \n“Executive Committee members will be elected from all voting districts of Giles County for a two-year term\,” Gattis said. “We encourage all those interested in helping further the local Democratic Party’s mission to present themselves at the convention as potential candidates for executive committee members or officers.” \nGattis said that local Democrats who would like to run for public office on the local\, state or national level are invited to come to the convention and introduce themselves. \n“This will be a time to meet our new leaders and spend time among other like-minded citizens\,” Gattis said. “We look forward to seeing long-time Giles County Democrats as well as Democrats who are new to the area.” \nAlso included in the morning’s activities will be a voter registration booth and a suggestion box.
